I just require that you have a lab notebook with the carbonless pages.   
It is up to you what you put in your notebook to help you complete the 
experiment.  I will want you to record your lab results in your 
notebook, and I will occasionally take up your copies for a record of 
what happened in lab.  I most often do this when we have a lab with an 
accuracy grade component.   Having copies of your lab notebook can 
sometimes helps me discern when or how things went wrong.
