Great question -- first look over the lab procedures and the report
forms. Pay particular attention to items that you need to record in
lab -- like masses and volumes. On the report forms you will also
notice several items that you will need to calculate and in some cases
graph. You will do most of the calculating and graphing outside of lab
on the REPORT, not in the lab notebook.
I recommend that for this first lab you record as much as you think you
are going to need to complete the lab correctly. I would recommend that
you go ahead and make charts that you can fill in with the data that you
need to record. For example, for the first part of the lab dealing with
the density of water, you should record exactly 12 different
measurements (4 volumes and 8 massings). Create that chart and give
yourself instructions on what should go in the different slots.
Go ahead and make two more identical charts to record data from two
other groups. Be sure to include the names of the people in those
groups next to their data once you collect the data in lab.
For the density of an unknown metal lab you should have exactly four
massings and a place to write the unknown number. Label all of these
things in your lab notebook and record the data in the appropriate location.
You should also record the temperature of the lab.
Hope that helps.
