The first thing you need to do is prepare a CALIBRATION PLOT for you
mercury lines. I updated the example calibration plot on the class
website for this lab. It is available at
http://theochem.mercer.edu/chm111/atomspec2.png
You make ONLY ONE calibration plot because you only have absolute
emission data for one set of lines -- mercury.
Using the Mercury Calibration plot, determine the wavelength, in nm, for
you other lines species -- record these in column 4.
For the mercury spectrum and the sodium salt you are asked to come up
with the energy of the transition in kJ/mol. The equation
$E=\frac{hc}{\lambda}$, where $\lambda$ is in meters, allows you to
convert the energies to Joules per photon. To convert to kJ/mol,
multiply this number by Avogadro's number and divide by 1000.
Lab this week has four components:
1. Cover Page (nothing in box)
2. Filled out report form
3. Calibration Graph
4. Copies from your lab notebook.
