Dr. Pounds,

Good afternoon. I had a couple questions regarding the
final exam. What should we be focusing on: topics covered
in tests, lectures, labs or will it just be a general
combination of those?

Yes.

This test will be approximately 40% multiple choice and 60%
problems. Some of the multiple choice may require you to do short
calculations.

I was also wondering what
the explanation behind number 10 part c on exam 5 was. I got
different answers for it and we both got it wrong, I’m
assuming the answer is that the pH decreases.

So on this problem you had a precipitate of Ca(OH)2 with
Ca2+ and OH- in solution. When you added the metal ion it
complexed with the OH in solution, drew it all out, and even drew up
the precipitate (as indicated in the problem). Therefore the OH-
concentration went down and the pH decreased.
