Yeah - I got in a rush when I sent the earlier e-mail before my gen-chem 
class this morning and the 1/2 exponent got left out...  try this

$\alpha = \tilde{\nu}_e \left(\frac{\pi \mu c}{\hbar D_e}\right)^{1/2}$
