I know that some of you are struggling with using
the vi editor (actually vim) on cobra. I just checked and there
are four additional editors -- each of which has a learning curve
that is less steep than vi.

gedit -- this is the one some of you have used in class
over MobaXterm. It utilizes X11 and also allows for the use of
the mouse.

pico -- this is actually the editor that was used on the
old "pine" e-mail system. It is very functional and does not
require X11 to run (you can use editors like this in putty). It
will use <CTRL> key sequences to initiate most commands

nano -- this is a "Gnu" version of pico that is supposed to
be a little bigger (and richer in features) that pico (if you
remember your prefixesl, you will catch some of the humor). It
does not require you to run over X11. It use the <CTRL> key
in a manner similar to pico

joe -- this is another powerful little screen editor that
does not require X11. It uses commands that are similar to the
old Wordstar word processing program.

If you want to learn vi then I applaud that -- it will never let
you down. For those of you that just need to get some things
done for homework and projects, try these out of cobra, learn one,
and stick with it for the rest of the semester. There are many
other options under Unix, but I know that these four exist and
work on cobra.

Let me know if you need assistance.
