Gentlemen... I need to make sure we are on the same page with a few
items...<br>
<br>
<ol>
<li>Our syllabus has us scheduled for a midterm exam on Thursday of
this week. I would like to reschedule that for next Thursday. I will
provide more information regarding this during classtime.</li>
<li>I gave you an assignment several weeks ago where you were
supposed to try various loop optimization techniques and let me know
what worked on the nasty code I gave you. If you remember, this is
where you attempted to use gconf to figure out what was taking the most
time. Please provide me with a brief paper telling me what you did to
enhance the performance. If you tried any loop optimizations, please
tell me what you did. Per our syllabus, this is programming exercise 1.<br>
</li>
<li>Three weeks ago I gave you a handout on Monte Carlo integration
and embarrasingly parallel calculations. I asked you to write some
code for this and then try to run it in parallel using OpenMP. I need
you to finish this up (in C/C++) ASAP so we can start looking at
parallel timings and Amdahls law in OpenMP. This will, per the
syllabus, form the code portion of programming exercise 2 and it will
form the basis for programming exercise 3, in which we re-write this
using <i>pthreads</i>.</li>
<li>Programming Assignment 3 -- the Fireworks Finale -- is now on the
website. Please look over the assignment and let me know if you have
any questions. This project only has two deliverables -- but make no
mistake, the final parallel code will be intense.</li>
<li>The first "baby blas" deliverable is due next Tuesday.</li>
<li>In class today we will experiment with PBS and I will show you
some techniques to guarantee you get correct timings from the cluster.
Please reboot the systems into olympus once you get to class today. I
will also show you how to use gnuplot to fit your timing data.<br>
</li>
