Friends -- it is time to do the annual update to dock (security patches,
kernel, system software upgrade). We are going to stick with CentOS 6
this year. While CentOS 7 has been out for about a year, there are
major differences in how it works under the hood. I am experimenting
with it on a laptop, but we are nowhere ready to put it into a
production environment. CentOS 6 will be supported with updates until
2020, so I am not concerned about staying with it for another year.
We may find that we need to upgrade to CentOS 7 next year to allow some
of you to run newer programs for your research. If you come across
anything denoting that please let me know.
Here is the bad news. One the repositories we used for system software
failed to stay current with the CentOS user community. As such some of
the software that they were providing is now causing conflicts with the
updates that we need to perform. I am going to need several hours to
determine exactly which programs are causing the problems, remove them,
install the same packages from a repository that has kept up with the
community, and the finally update the entire system.
I would like to schedule downtime for dock either Wednesday, Thursday,
or Friday afternoon to fix these things.
Does anybody have a problem with that?
