Good evening everyone. I was alerted to a system problem this morning
in GSC 405. When I got there one of the systems had rebooted into
windows. Further investigation revealed that the hard drive had
overheated, the system shut down, automatically rebooted, and booted
into windows due to the failed linux boot drive. Another system is
indicating similar drive failures. A third system has a failing hard
drive -- but it is not a boot drive.
In all cases Mercer IT has to come over and clear out the Dell error
logs for the systems to boot properly. The system with the failed boot
drive will take longer because I don't have a spare drive to put in
there. Anyway, due to these hardware errors I am temporarily asking you
not to use GSC 405.
Research students -- you are welcome to use the systems in GSC 218 on
Tuesdays and Thursdays and on MWF afternoons. You will need to reboot
those systems into linux (I'll show you how to do that) but all of the
programs you use should work down there too. Graphics students -- I'm
going to try and get enough systems functioning tomorrow so we can have
class in the lab the rest of the week. We will not have class
tomorrow. I will provide you with a video lecture on texture mapping to
replace the class you are missing tomorrow.
As a side note -- please do not adjust the thermostat in GSC 405. I
try to keep it at its lowest setting to avoid problems like I
experienced this weekend.
