I was asked by a student what electrode potential to use for mercury
from the table in your text.

After careful examination, I found that there is a typo in your book.

Please use the following for mercury...

Hg^2+ (aq) + 2e^- ---> Hg (l)     +0.854 V

and for aluminum...

Al^3+ (aq) + 3e^- ---> Al (s)      -1.676 V
