You need to have enough material in the lab notebook so that you could 
complete the lab using only your lab notebook.  This includes make 
places to record information from the lab.  I am not interested, at this 
time, in the background information and theory. Generally those things 
are discussed in journal papers or textbooks.  While I may, in my 
professional notebooks, reference these things, I never go to the length 
of recopying the material into my notebook.  You also want to make sure 
that you have places to record the data collected in lab.  I don't want 
to see "extra sheets of paper" -- everything should be in the lab notebook.
