Look closely at the figure on the first page of the Standardization of 
NaOH lab procedures.  The phthalate has a acidic hydrogen ion that is 
replaced by the sodium.  The hydrogen that is replaced by the sodium 
then combines with the OH to make water.  This happens on a 1:1 basis.
