Students -- I am sending this out to thwart any ensuing e-mails related
to this topic.
Over the last two days I've gotten the following requests...
1. Since I'm dropping test X, can you move my extra credit points from
test X to test Y.
2. I did well on test X and really didn't need extra credit there -- can
you DOUBLE my extra credit on test Y?
3. I had to work during the guest lecture -- can you give me the points
anyway?
4. I couldn't come to the guest lecture because of _________. It
doesn't seem fair that I can't get the extra credit points. Will you
give me the points anyway?
5. I didn't know I had to sign in. (Dr. Moore made it VERY clear that
there was a sign up sheet for those that were ON TIME or that did not
LEAVE EARLY.)
The extra credit lectures were VOLUNTARY. You provided a service to
the Department of Chemistry by being there and you also got to hear two
other Ph.D.'s talk about calorimetry -- which was the topic of the class
and upcoming lab. Many of you made a special effort to be there, even
skipping lunch in some cases, and I expressed my appreciation by giving
extra credit points on two different tests -- test 2 and test 3. Not
attending the guest lecture in no way negatively impacts your grade --
but making the effort to come to the lectures probably both helped you
with some of the content from the class as well as garnering you a few
extra points . I furthermore allowed everyone to get extra credit on
test 4 by just bringing your periodic table on which you could make notes.
I have to draw the line somewhere. The extra credit points were awarded
on SPECIFIC TESTS and cannot be transferred, combined, or awarded
without your presence at the lectures.
