Interesting -- the compiler is no longer signaling a NAN or an underflow 
-- but just going to zero.


Where do you stop "trusting" the numbers"?  What is the limit for double 
precision floating point?


For this problem you can report where you no longer trust the numbers 
--- and forget about the NAN because apparently that was changed in the 
compiler.
